Order of Friars Minor in Great Britain

First Profession of Marc Riemer and Michael O'Grad

Having been called forward Michael and Marc then freely state their intentions to profess the rule and life of the Order of Friars Minor.

The Minister Provincial then prays with the people for the two candidates, asking God to strengthen them as they follow in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Marc also signs the solemn book of profession, witnessed again by Brothers Séamus and Joe.

All the Friars and people present offer their congratulations.

First Profession of Marc Riemer and Michael O'Grad

“I have been asked to put together a few words about what taking simple vows means for me. I knelt in the presence of God surrounded by my family, friends, Franciscan family from both the English and Irish provinces and declared my intention to live a life of chastity, obedience and without anything of my own. Ultimately I am trying on a daily basis to live a life inspired by Jesus Christ and His message of the Good News in the tradition of Saint Francis. The vows were taken after much discernment and following the process of time spent in the Postulancy and Novitiate. It is an honest attempt to make God the centre of my life in all things and recognise that everything good that happens in my life comes from Him and when I fail, as I often do, that I am sustained by His mercy. It is life lived out in fraternity with my brothers in faith where I am challenged and sustained. These vows, similar in many ways to those taken by a married couple, are an outward expression of what is going on within my heart. I try to follow Christ in the footsteps of Saint Francis and am blessed in so many ways” (Br Michael O’Grady OFM).

Michael Copps, the Minister Provincial, examines the two candidates to determine whether they are ready to consecrate themselves to God as Franciscan brothers.

Michael O'Grady reads out his profession as he places his hands in the hands of the Minister Provincial, who for his part receives this profession of vows.

Michael then signs the solemn book of profession, witnessed by Séamus Mulholland, the Student Master in Canterbury, and Joe Condren, their Novice Master. This is then kept as a permanent record of the vows taken by Michael.

Michael and Marc are congratulated and offered the sign of peace from the Minister Provincial.
